SENTENCE ON BITAR

The Higher State Security Court in Damascus yesterday sentenced the former Syrian Prime'Minister, Salah Bitar, and seven other Syrian politicians to life imprisonment at hard labour on charges of plotting to overthrow the Syrian Leftist Ba’ath regime in June last year, the New York Times News Service reports. Bitar, aged 56. has been living in Lebanon in exile since his Government was overthrown by the present Syrian rulers in 1966. He and 21 other defendants were tried in absentia. Of the 77 accused, 55 were arrested in June last year and chargee! with conspiracy against the State. Other sentences varied between 20 years to one year's imprisonment. Ten were acquitted# The sentences were announced by Radio Damascus.
