Maori Prime Minister
Sir, —Would it be possible to learn through your corres-[ pondence column whether i New Zealand has had a Maori: ’or part-Maori Prime Minister? FOUNTAIN. i December 17, 1968. j [New Zealand has not had [a Maori or part-Maori Prime j Minister, but a half-caste Maori has been Acting Prime Minister. Sir James Carroll, first elected to the House of Representatives in 1887 as member for Eastern Maori, was Native Minister and Minister of Stamp Duties in the Ward Ministry from 1906 to 1912, and became senior member of the Cabinet in 1908. He was Acting Prime Minister from June 18 to September 30, 1909, during the absence of Sir Joseph Ward at an Imperial Conference on naval defence, and from April 3 to August 26, 1911, while the Prime Minister attended an Imperial Conference and the coronation of King George V. During the first of Sir James Carroll’s terms as Acting Prime Minister the House of Representatives was not in session. He was Leader of the House for a month before the return of Sir Joseph Ward on August 25, 1911.]
