Shantung Popular Fancy For Derby Today

"The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Form and breeding, at any time the main considerations, make Shantung a very popular choice to win the $BOOO Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie today. On both counts she clearly outscores most of her rivals.

Shantung has already won an open middle distance, something not yet accomplished by any of the Derby contenders. Also, she is a half-sister of Red Handed, the winner of last year’s Melbourne Cup. A bay filly by Ironic from Red Might (by Red Mars), and another staying product of the Pirongia Stud, Shantung is let out on lease by the stud proprietor, Mr J. L. Macky, to two Wellington owners, Messrs A. R. Dunn and M. D. Williams. She is trained at Te Rapa by W. C. Winder and will,be ridden by a stable apprentice, G. P. Chitty. Last time out she won over 11 furlongs at Paeroa in conditions of weather and track that were too much for many older and well-seasoned opponents. The time before she took an intermediate mile at Pukekohe. FEW FILLIES Wins for the fillies have been few and far between in the derbies of recent years. Since 1950 only Passive (1957) and Star Belle (1966) of Shantung’s sex have been successful and they were outstanding in their three-year-old seasons. Yet it seems that Brazil, a filly from Marton, will be one of the hardest for Shantung to beat, and that another, Aqualoo, from Stratford, could get some of the stake. The colts they will find hardest to keep out are Lord Cheval, Pep, Bardall and Claudius. Nothing during the last day or two lessened the likelihood of two Te Rapa runners, Il Tempo and Honour Me, disputing the finish of the other big race, the Queen Elizabeth Handicap. Both seem to have come through their training well and they will need to gain placings in this one if they are to retain their Auckland Cup followings. Loofah and a light-weight, Pacific Prince, might be the hardest for them to beat. STRONG FIELD Mayo Gold, Samurai and Miss Lynette are among many possibilities in the main sprint, the Newmarket Handicap. Some of the others are Fair Law, Nausori and Mannix, so the field has exceptional class. Showers yesterday did no more than ease the track which was in excellent order. The T.A.B. concession double is the Queen Elizabeth Handicap and the Newmarket Handicap. Selections.— Noon.
