60 Men Battle Auckland Fire
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, December 25. Sixty firemen battling a big fire today in a storeroom at the Southdown works of the Auckland Farmers Freezing Company, Ltd, were concerned that an ammonia pipe in the room might burst.
The pipe collapsed but, fortunately, did not break. The fire, which was confined to a carton and bag storeroom, caused thousands of dollars worth of damage. The cause is not yet known. The roof of the room, three storeys up, caved in. Concrete fireproof walls prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby freezer departments. The firemen, including volunteers, had the fire out just after 5 p.m. The Deputy Chief Fire
Officer (Mr A. W. Bruce) said it was fortunate that the ammonia pipe suspended under the roof in the storeroom had not broken. If it had done so, only firemen With breathing apparatus would have been able to get to the fire. The freezing company’s industrial officer, Mr L. W. Lane, said workmen had not been in the storeroom since about noon on Tuesday.
The fire would not set back production at the works. ~
