New Leper Hospital
Tenders have been called for a $500,000 hospital in Fiji which will be called the P. J. Twomey Memorial Hospital. It will be built in the hills five miles out of Suva, and named after the founder and first secretary of the Lepers’ Trust Board. An immediate start on the new hospital comes after the announcement of a grant of £137,210 from the British Government. This will be subsidised by the Fiji Government. The Lepers’ Trust Board will contribute $110,000—880,000 towards the cost of the hospital itself and $30,000 for a nurses’ home. The new move is in line with modern thought in the treatment of leprosy and will make it easier for patients to get specialised treatment. It will enable the old hospital at Makogai to be closed, which will result in a considerable saving in day-to-day running expenses and eliminate the cost of transport between the island and Viti Levu.
