NEW GOLF CLUB
Name To Be Coringa Christchurch’s new golf club, which was originally to be called the “Canterbury Golf Club,” is now to be known as the “Coringa Country Club.” Tbe matter was discussed by the preliminary committee and the new name agreed to unanimously. The area which the course will cover was called the Coringa Run in the 1850 s and the original homestead was about a mile south of Harewood Airport. The fact that the club had no official title was delaying progress because, without a name, no money could be received from intending members. It was learnt that the club could not use the name “Canterbury” without the consent of the Christchurch Golf Club (Shirley) and, on application, permission was not granted. When the New Zealand Open was being played at Shirley, R. J. Charles and K. D. G. Nagle visited the area and were most impressed with its prospects.
