Some Finals Reached In Secondary Tennis
Both candidates for the Wilson Cup team to go to Australia in January, two Canterbury girls, R. Legge and R. Dillon, are having a concentrated tennis life at present.
Just more than a week ago they were playing in the Canterbury championships; last week-end they competed in the Wellington championships; and this week they are playing in the Canterbury secondary schools championships. As expected, Misses Legge, of Avonside Girls’ High School and Dillon, of St Mary’s College, will meet in the final of the open singles at Wilding Park today but Miss Dillon, at least, had ai difficult task getting through! her semi-final yesterday. Seeded second, she beat one | of her Christchurch senior! women’s inter-club rivals and; a junior rival over several seasons. G. Hampton, of I Avonside, seeded third, 6-1,1 1-6, 6-3. Miss Dillon, who has' reached the semi-finals of the! Wellington women’s singles! and who must be pleased to have the practice for this im-i portant engagement next | week-end, looked at peak form when she won the first sef with the loss of only the one game. As she began the second sei she appeared confident but Miss Hampton, who has also been playing well this season, adopted a plan of drawing her to net and passing her down the sidelines or over her head, or waiting for an error. This worked satisfactorily; for Miss Hampton, who won the second set as decisively; as her opponent had won the first. In the third Miss Dil-j lon restrained her desire to; move in and concentrated on : the strong driving game at: which she excels. More Comfortable Miss Legge had a much more comfortable win over the fourth-seeded, G. Iredale, of St Mary’s College, 6-4, 6-0, but Miss Iredale played some good tennis. She has been ranked only fifth on the latest Canterbury under-17 list, but she stood up well to Miss Legge’s strong service, and she tried to keep her away from the net with deep forehands. This was successful for much of the first set then the tide of Miss Legge’s volleying became too great to stem. The holder of the title. R. Tuck, of Cashmere High School, reached the final of ! the open boys’ singles when he won his semi-final without ■ the loss of a game. Tuck beat i
118. Habgood, of Lincoln High • I School, by taking advantage : of his opponent’s weaker 1 backhand and moving in to >the net Habgood won some [good points with his forehand. •| Under U Singles In the semi-finals of the under 16 boys’ singles, K. Lewis (Hill;morton). the holder of the title, who eliminated the top seed ion Monday, will play P. Mitchell. of Christchurch Boys’ High School, seeded fourth, and T. ■ Mooney (St Bede’s), seeded ■ second, will meet the third- : seeded R. Versteeg (Cashmere). ! Yesterday the second seeded player went out of the under ! 16 girls’ singles in the quarterI finals when K. Davey, of Cottesmore. beat A. Meates, of ; Sacred Heart, 6-5. 6-1. She I will now meet S. Moore, seeded I fourth. , In the other semi-final, the ! top-seeded P. Bamford (St : Mary's), who has this week I been ranked top of the Canterbury under 17 list, will play IR. Smith (Cottesmore), seeded third. i In her quarter-final yesteriday, Bamford met the improvi ing Darfield player. L. Begg, who had done excellently to • beat formidable Christchurch girls on the first day of the tournament. Miss Begg tested Miss Bamford in the first set, but later the slimly built Miss Bamford placed the ball beautifully and moved in for angled volleys. Two St Bede’s boys, R. Dillon, seeded first and P. Gilmour, seeded second, will contest the final of the third form boys’ singles. When Dillon beat N. Blackburn (Linwood High School) with the loss of only one game, he drove deeply and | turned his shots with a wristy flick.
