Police Thank Public For ‘Splendid Co-operation’
The police were grateful for the splendid and growing co-operation received from the public, said the Christchurch crime prevention officer' (Detective Sergeant E. J. Stackhouse) yesterday. “Crime is a community problem, and it is very satisfying to note that more and more persons—householders, ■ passers-by and motorists—are assisting the police, “Several have risked dan- | ger—the recent stabbing in 'Wellington is a case in point. A great many have taken an active part in trying to stop crimes—the Auckland bank robbery is a recent example —and hundreds have given valuable information to the police which has resulted in some dangerous and very daring criminals being caught,” Detective Sergeant Stackhouse said. In Christchurch, he said, the noting of car numbers, the reporting of unusual behaviour, the giving of excellent descriptions and much other valuable information from the public had led to the prompt arrest of dozens of offenders. “The newspapers, and other news media, by good reporting of police news have made the general public aware of information required. It is
significant that after the recent warnings about thefts from vehicles the number of offences has dropped slightly. “At this busiest time of the year, commercial firms should take serious thought about guarding their cash takings. Businessmen should inquire about late-banking facilities and pick-up services provided by private security firms. “Householders, motorists, business men, staff and all property owners will help the police and help the community if they prevent a youngster from being tempted into a life of crime by locking the door and removing the key."
