Cut In Samoan Wharf Project

(New Zealand Press Association) APIA (Western Samoa), Dec. 15. During its budget session this week the Western Samoan Government made major reductions in a project to cut a channel to the new wharf at Asau in Savaii.

The channel was to be part of a wharf construction project which was backed by New Zealand with.a S2 million loan in 1965. The two wharves in the

project, one at Apia and one at Asau, were completed, although the scope of work had to be reduced when the budget ran out. But the new wharf at Asau, completed in 1966, still cannot be reached by a ship. The coral reef has resisted the efforts of Western Samoa’s dredge for two years, and attempts by Royal New Zealand Navy divers to blast the coral loose failed. This week the Public Accounts Committee urged Parliament to cancel the vote of S3OOO and call for a full report.
