George Medal Winner Dies
A man who was awarded the George Medal for rescuing eight persons from a bombed air-raid shelter in London at the height of the blitz in the Second World War, died in Christchurch yesterday. He was Mr F. W. G. Yates, of Grantley Street, New Brighton. At the time of the bombing, Mr Yates was in command of a depot of the A.R.P. organisation in London. Although gas had been escaping from the shelter for several hours Mr Yates went in and brought out the eight, persons, who were all alive. Mr Yates received the George Medal from King George VI at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. A builder by trade, Mr Yates served in the Merchant Navy for the remainder of the war. Mr Yates came to New Zealand with his family 17 years ago. The family went back to Britain for two years and returned again to settle. Mr Yates is survived by his wife and daughter, and a son in England.
