LUXEMBURG ELECTION
Communists Show Gain (N.Z. P.A .-Reuter—Copyright ? LUXEMBURG, Dec. 16. The Luxemburg Communist Party, the only one in Western Europe to approve the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, has made gains in the General Election. Almost complete returns show that the two Opposition parties, the Communists and the Liberals (Conservatives), have made heavy inroads at the expense of the Socialists, who were junior partners in the outgoing coalition with the Social Christians (Catholics). With more than threequarters of the returns in, the Communists are expected to increase their seats from five to at least seven in a Parliament with 56 seats. The Liberals are expected to gain four more seats for a total of 10, and the Social Christians appeared to have maintained their strength at 22. The Prime Minister (Mr Pierre Werner) and Foreign Minister (Mr Pierre Gregoire) both Social Christians, and Mr Henry Cravatte, Leader of the Socialists and Deput. Prime Minister, were all re-elected.
