Polar Veteran Dies

The veteran Antarctic scientist, Dr Paul A. Siple, who spent five years on the continent died of a heart attack in Arlington, Virginia, on November 25. He was 59. Mr Siple first went to the Antarctic as a 19-year-old Boy Scout on Admiral R. E. Byrd’s 1928-30 expedition. He went back several times. He wrote a book about his experiences at the South Pole when America first established a base there. He was last in Christchurch in 1965. At the time he was the scientific attache at the United States Embassy in Canberra. He acted as a liaison officer for scientific research in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Leading Herd The honour of recording the best performance of any herd under 50 cows tested in New Zealand during the 196768 season goes to the Pitcairns herd of pedigree Friesians owned and milked by Mr and Mrs E. L. Adams at Brookside, Canterbury, reports the New Zealand Friesian Association. The 42 cows in the herd averaged 12,4941 b of milk with a 4.28 per cent test and 5781 b of fat in 295 days. Included in this average was the return of one cow that was milked for only 134 days before being lost through an accident. World Weather !
