FLOOD-GATE ON CAM

Agreement On

Location

The flood-gate to be put across the C»m River at Kaiapoi to stop, flooding in the upper reaches will be a separate structure, ahd not combined with the northern motorway’s combined road-rail-river overpass. This was agreed to by the North Canterbury Catchment Board, which two months ago had suggested that the motorway overpass and the flood-gate might be combined.

The board decided that construction should be planned for November, 1969 to May, 1970, and to give urgency to the design work. It was agreed to engage a consulting engineer to help with the design.

‘This will be a major job, involving four to six months work for the staff,” said Dr W. R. Holmes. “It has been our policy with jobs such as this to use consultants, rather than build up an empire.”
