Surf Carnival Abandoned

Difficult water conditions and unpleasant weather forced the abandonment of the first Canterbury championship surf life-saving carnival of the season, at South Brighton yesterday.

Only half of the programme was completed and the problem now facing the association is when the remaining events can be run off. There is no time before Christmas and after that the season is heavily booked. One of the non-champion-ship carnivals on a Saturday may be converted to championship status. The only event decided was the junior surf race. As expected, B. Ward (South Brighton) successfully defended his individual title from his club-mates, B. Leyton and R. Wilson, enabling South Brighton to win the teams’ section by 33 points. D. Dalton (North Beach) showed his usual dash to win the third heat of the senior surf ski rescue championship. He looked likely to hold his title later in the day, but the meeting was abandoned well before this.

In the conditions Waimairi did well to lose only 9.6 points to win the opening heat of the women’s six-person rescue and resuscitation. Central Brighton Ladies’ lost 14.92 points and North Beach 21.62 points. Waimairiri’s lead will be hard to head in the second and final heat at a later carnival.

The main feature of the boat races was the inability of the South Brighton A crew to beat the B crew in the senior race. J. Campbell (New Brighton), the title-holder, won his heat of the junior beach sprint and his closest rival, G. Skerton

<New Brighton) won the second heat.
