Postponed Meeting To Be Held Today

“Th* Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND.

Fine weather and a drying wind yesterday afternoon gave every promise that the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s meeting, postponed from Saturday because of impossible conditions, would be held today on no worse than easy footing.

A new week-day timetable has been arranged with the firat race starting at 11.45 a.m. and the last at 5 p.m.—4o minutes later than previously.

A downpour early on Saturday morning forced the club to a postponement, its first for over 40 years. At daybreak parts of the track, near the seven furlong and the home turn, were under water and the public car park was awash. The committee met at 6.45 a.m. to consider the situation and the decision to postpone the meeting was made an hour later. The weather cleared soon afterward but only briefly. Altogether an inch and a half of rain fell between midnight on Friday and 11.30 am. on Saturday. Once a heavy track became certain, owners and trainers rushed to the secretary of the club. Mr D. G. Hancock, to scratch their horses. Luckily Mr Hancock warned them of the likelihood of a postponement and none of the scratchings were taken. When the meeting wee in fact postponed, each of the owners and trainers was told of the decision and of the 33 intended scratchings only two wore even* tually lodged. The 33 which might well have been accepted included the Thames Valley Stakes candidate!. 11 Tempo and Mayo Gold.

Ben Lemfind It pretty certain to be the beet bached all the same and unless the ground is very toft he should go well. Honour Me, Mayo Gold and Bar. dall. as previously, will very likely be his hardest opponents, although tatua Is now worth rather more respect. He is at his best when the going Is soft or very easy.

Spring FHou has raced well whatever th* going so he should hold his position as favourite for the first leg of the T.A.8.1 double, the W. S. Goosman Handicap. Irma Fo* might be the hardest for him to beat.

Dashing Lu is one of the Held for the second leg, the Flying Thousand, which had her pros, peel's hdlpeg by the rain. A five-year-old mare, she is trained at te Aroha by J. L. Revell, and she is al her best when fresh, the condition she will be tn today after a spell of nearly six months. Even One ran well tn soft going as well as on top of the ground last season so she is entitled to remain one of the favourites. Selections:
