Two New Caps In Cricket Side
Two players new to Canterbury cricket are included in the
team for the first of the season’s Pluriket Shield matches, against Otago at Christmas. They are P. G. Coman of East Christ-church-Shirley and J. D. Riley of Old Collegians, both of them aggressive batsmen.
The twelve players selected are:
G. T. Dowling (captain), R. W. Anderson, J. w. Burtt. P. G. Coman, B. F. Hastings. N. A. Huxford, R. C. Motz, J. M. Mclntyre, J. D. Riley, B. R. Taylor, K. Thomson, J. T. Ward.
The selection followed the expected lines, with Coman winning place for which there were several contenders, notably B G. Hadlee.
The selection of Anderson may surprise some. He failed for Canterbury last season and has had a run of low scores this summer. He is probably destined to be twelfth man for the first match, but the selectors have done just what selectors are usually advised to do by cricketers—refuse to discard a player of particular promise without a reasonably long trial. Dowlings opening partner might be Ward, or possibly Riley, although for a youngster in his first match Riley might find it a burdensome task. Coman seems better fitted to an attacking role later in the order than to opening. Universities Came Four of those chosen in the Plunket Shield team are not available for the match against New Zealand Universities at Christchurch on December 22 and 23. The team for this match is: Anderson, Burtt, Coman, Hastings, B. P. Isherwood, K. I. Ferris, Riley, D. G. Trist, Taylor, Thomson, and Mclntyre, with R. W. Fulton twelfth man. The teams will begin their practices at Lancaster Park this afternoon, and the following Rothman's tournament prospects are also asked to attend: D. R. Hadlee, C. M. Kirk, B. Bhana, C. deß. Galwey, P. d’Auvergne.
