Trist And Coman Win Double- Wicket

A meeting of East and West—P. G. Coman and D. G. Trist—won the Canterbury Cricket Association’s double-wicket tournament at Lancaster Park yesterday. The other finalists were B. G. Hadlee (Old Boys) and K. I. Ferries (St Albans).

This was the first-double-wicket tournament held in the South Island but the attendance was disappointing.

Not many of the 700 watching stayed through a whole afternoon of bitterly cold weather. But in every other way, the occasion was a success. The organisation was excellent, and so was the cricket. In about 260 minutes of batting, 370 runs were scored. The innings of the day was played by Hadlee, in a semifinal. His 45 not out, in four overs, was easily the highest although in the first-round matches the innings were of

six overs. Hadlee played some magnificent shots, hitting the only 6 of the day, off M. G. Lester, and taking 20 from S. C. Guillen’s last over. Spirited Slashes Hadlee and Ferries looked a likely combination when they beat J. W. Burtt and K. A. Nicholson in the first match. Burtt, although beaten by Ferries two or three times, looked a form batsman, and Ferries hit the winning runs with some spirited slashes off Nicholson. There was a disappointment when B. R. Taylor was out first ball, and although his partner, J. D. Riley, played aggressively and well, they went down to Guillen and Lester. Coman batted very attractively and sturdily to effect the defeat of G. T. Dowling and F. J. Cameron. K. Thomson and R. W. Anderson both batted with assurance in beating B. F. Hastings and J. M. Mclntyre. In the semi-finals, Hadlee’s innings assured his side of victory, although Guillen made a bold bid. When two of the four overs had been bowled, 22 of the 48 runs needed had been made. But Guillen and Lester fell to consecutive balls. Coman again batted purposefully in his semi-final. The surprise of the final was the batting contribution of Trist, who brought off some slightly unorthodox but powerful and effective drives. Hadlee and Ferries needed 31 in four overs, but the first one, by Trist, yielded only three, and it cost Ferries his wicket.

• Hadlee took 11 off Coman's first , over, but when the total was ’ 15 he was bowled by Trist, • playing defensively.
