Trouble In Square

Traffic officers and policemen were jeered at while making attempts to control the large number of cars and youths in Cathedral Square on Saturday between 10.30 p.m. and 11 p.m. From 10.20 p.m. the number of youths and cars in the Square quickly built up until at 11 p.m. several hundred youths and girls filled the footpath from the Plaza Arcade \ to the Regent Theatre’ Youths who were stopped by traffic officers for vehicle checks or for committing offences were cheered on by their fellows on the footpaths. At 11 p.m. five policemen arrived and began dispersing the crowd. A scuffle started near the Godley Plot and a youth was arrested and charged with assaulting a policeman and resisting arrest. Ten minutes later the crowd had shifted away from the area and the number of i cars had diminished.
