ART AS U.E. SUBJECT
Introduction Welcomed
The announcement that for I the first time next year art! would be a subject for uni-! versify entrance would give a tremendous lift to art education in New Zealand, said Mr D. H. Graham, a lecturer in art at the Christchurch Teachers’ College. The subject would be open to all university entrance candidates, not just secondary school art students, said Mr Graham.
It would be an accrediting subject and this was a considerable compliment to art teachers, he said. The prescription includes a general survey of European 1 art from the period of the! Greeks to the present, and! a study of the fundamentals' of design. There is a section on art! in New Zealand—architec- ! ture, painting and sculpture,’ and any minor related arts.! and also art as related to the; environment of students. The question of whether! the fine arts preliminary ex-! amination would be continued I had not yet been resolved,! said Mr Graham.
