MANAGEMENT OF PRISON
Criminologist ; Gives Views -. (N.Z. Press Association) ■ AUCKLAND, December 5. s An Auckland criminologist, ■- Mr I. F. McDonald, who yes- - terday criticised the new s4m : maximum security prison at . Paremoremo as “a monument - to the spirit of vindictive retribution,” was today asked to give his alternative to it. His answer was: “Hand over its functions to an independent board of management, comprised of experts in behavioural and social sciences.” The effect would be twofold, he said. It would rid ’ the penal system of the con- [ tinual conflict between the ‘ inmate and “authority” in the ’ guise of bureaucratic control, and would allow programmes and, if necessary, therapy to be determined to ' suit the needs of human beings whom society “in its wisI dom” had decided, must ’ forgo their freedom. i Books Considered.—The In- ■ decent Publications Tribunal on Thursday considered two • novels and reserved its deci- ! sion on both. The books are ■ “Candy,” by Terry Southern I and Mason Hoffenburg, and II “The Exhibitionist,” by ■ j Henry Sutton. Both books are 11 published by Bernard Geis, London.—(PA.)
