MAYORAL VIEWS

While the new Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) is trying to dispense with formalities and traditions associated with his office that he regards as outmoded, he found himself host yesterday to Mr P. Tait, the Mayor of Napier and president of the New Zealand Municipal Association, who holds some traditional views. Mr Tait would like to see every local body meeting begin with a prayer. He wants to “restore and maintain the dignity of council meetings inside and outside the council chambers,” and commended to Canterbury municipal representatives yesterday the Napier system of councillors wearing a “jewel” of office and having their names on an honours board in the council.
