YOUNG NICK STATUE

(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Nov. 20. A bronze statue of “Young Nick", the cabin boy in Captain Janies Cook's Endeavour who first sighted land in New Zealand when the Endeavour sailed into Poverty Bay in 1769, is to be presented to the city of Gisborne by the New Zealand Insurance Company. The gift will be made to mark the Cook bi-centenary next year. It will stand in a Waikanae Beach playground overlooking Young Nick’s Head, the promontory sighted by Nicholas Young. The playground is being developed by the Gisborne Lions’ Club. The statue will be about sft tall and will stand on a 9ft pedestal. It will be the work of Frank Szirmay.
