Rate Rising ! In Britain 1 \ (N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, Nov. 21. i Britain’s death rate from i fires is increasing, figures i published by the Joint Fire Research Association dis ) close. i In the first half of this year there were 50 fires in which more than one person ! died, compared with 78 -in the whole of 1966, and 35 in 1960. The report which deals with activities in 1967. showed that 780 people died in fires attended by the fire brigade in 1966. Previous j figures were: 1965—703: 196-1 !—681: 1963—818: 1962—667; 11961—572: 1960—529. About 36 per cent of fire deaths are children under the age of five. Most of the fatal fires in homes involved houses built before 1910. Often these houses provided accommodation for several families.

Saigon Meetings —The United States Ambassador (Mr Ellsworth Bunker) today had separate meetings with President Nguyen Van Thieti and the Prime Minister (Mr Tran Van Huong) amid speculation of a significant new step soon on the Paris peace talks, stalled by Saigon's boycott.—Saigon, November 21.
