OPERATION PLANNED

Replacement Of Knee (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 19. i A new operation for the re- , placement of the knee is to be developed at Middlemore Hospital. The Auckland HosIpital Board last evening approved the project and asked [its finance committee to re[port on the equipment required. Middlemore Hospital has lattracted international recognition for its work in total hip joint replacement and the knee replacement would be a logical development, the board was told. Many patients, especially rheumatoid arthritis sufferers, have such extensive disease that relief of pain and restoration of movement could not be achieved by other methods. Pain could be reduced by a surgical operation to stiffen the knee but this greatly restricted movement, the board [was told. The stiffening operation required five weeks in [hospital and a further four [weeks in plaster.
