Aust. Farmers ‘Must Allow N.Z. Exports’
(N.Z PA. Staff Correspondent) ORANGE (N.S.W.), Nov. 19. Australian farmers were told today that New Zealand must be allowed to sell her products on the Australian market if she is to remain a major buyer of Australian manufactured goods.
The New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr J. L. Hazlett) issued a warning to farmers all over Australia when he opened the National Field Day agricultural exhibi-
tion at Orange, 167 miles west of Sydney. “If there are those of you who feel that New Zealand imports constitute a threat to your own production may 1 remind you of the great importance to Australia of the export market in New Zealand,” he said. Mr Hazlett said Australia sold goods worth 8142 m a year to New Zealand and was the Dominion's largest supplier after Britain.
“If we are to buy we must sell,” he said.
Orange, in the heart of some of the finest grazing land in Australia, was the focal point of opposition by farmers to New Zealand’s lamb exports earlier this year. New Zealand is the guest nation at this year’s field day. said to be the largest exhibition of farming machinery in the world.
