s i island became the reception 1 centre for refugees of Greek . origin fleeing from Turkey. After the First World - War the Greeks took over a -large area of Asia Minor ■ ' around the city of Smyrna. ; But this was the period of the great Turkish resurgence -under Kemal Ataturk. In 1921 the Turks attacked the ■ Greeks and within a year had r ousted them from Turkish i soil, capturing Smyrna and ' inflicting heavy casualties. The Allied powers in the eastern Mediterranean mustered all available shipping to rescue the survivors, many of whom reached Malta in a pitiable condition. The Maltese cared for them for many i months until they were jsettled in new homes in 1 Greece.
