Juniors' Tournament
A sponsored tournament for young golfers, to be held at Harewood on Sunday afternoon, will usher in a week of top-class golf in Christchurch, with the practice rounds for the New Zealand Open at Shirley, then the Open beginning on Thursday, November 28. The junior tournament, for players from 14 to 25 years of age, has been sponsored by Spaldings, Ltd, and it has attracted entries from many fine young players, several of whom will be acompeting in the Open. The event is being conducted by the Canterbury Junior Golfing Society, a very active organisation which has I had a busy year.
In the boys’ section, the players will compete for some handsome prizes, and those under 19 will also have a competition of their own.
The girls will play in a single group. There will be 18 holes of stroke play, and putting and driving competitions. Strong Entry Among some of the leading young players who have entered so far are R. M. Farrant, B. C. Taylor, D. R. Hope, W. Hoy, J. A. Orr, G. Titnius, R. S. Peate and R. Carr. The lowest-handicapped of the entrants in the girls’ section is Miss S. Bissett.
Already more than 50 entries have been received, and post-entries will be accepted. One of the most interesting aspects of the entry is the challenge of the Rutherford family, of North Canterbury, S. Rutherford, only 16 years old, is on a handicap of 4; his twin sisters, a year younger, are on handicaps of 14 (Judith) and 15 (Susan) — remarkably good marks for girls of their age.
