Daley Named In Damages Suit

CHICAGO, Nov. 19.
The American Civil Liberties Union (A.C.L.U.) has filed a $1.25m damages suit in the United States District Court against the City of Chicago and its Police Department because of injuries suffered by a seminary student during the Democratic Convention last August.
The suit, which names the Mayor (Mr Richard Daley), the Police Superintendent (Mr James Conlisk) and two other police officials, was filed on behalf <q Mr Roy Ries,
aged 24. who had his skull fractured in Chicago’s Lincoln Park on the night of August 26—the d oyaf 26—the day the convention opened.
Mr Ries, a student of Chicago’s McCormick Theological Seminary, said he spent 12 days in hospital with a fractured skull, multiple lacerations of the skull, and temporary loss of sight in one eye. According to the suit, Mr Ries was clubbed twice by two policemen with a gun butt when he went to the park, dressed in clerical garb, with a group of clergymen who attempted to urge demonstrators to disperse.
The suit is the first of 15 being brought by the A.C.L.U. alleging police brutality during the convention, said Mr Jay Miller, an executive director of the tlnion.
