CONGRESS ON WATER
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MADRID, Nov. 19. More than 200 scientists from 25 countries have begun a four-day congress in Madrid on methods of using nuclear energy to supply fresh water to dry regions of the world. They are attending an international congress on nuclear desalination of sea-water. They will discuss whether nuclear plants can provide a world-wide solution to the problems of water shortage. Spanish officials believe that water obtained from nuclear desalination plants will soon prove cheaper than building dams and reservoirs. The plants would also provide cheap electric power. The congress, opened yesterday by the Spanish Industry Minister (Mr Gregorio Lopez Bravo), will continue until Friday.
