20 DEAD IN FIRE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GLASGOW, November 19.

Firemen today were searching for more bodies in the (blackened shell of a dockside warehouse where flames and i smoke yesterday killed at least 20 people. Many perished screaming behind iron-barred windows as fire quickly enveloped the three-storey former bonded warehouse near the River Clyde. Mr James Anderson, who heads Glasgow s police and fire committee, condemned the barred windows as “an anachronism of the eighteenth century,” and spoke of the possibility of criminal negligence. By toefay, 20 bodies—ls men and five women—had been recovered and three people were in hospital with slight injuries. Among the dead was a mother and her 17-year-old daughter. Mr Anderson said: “At this stage I am certainly not prepared to apportion blame. But there would seem to be criminal negligence on someone’s part.”
