Communists Gain Ground (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ROME. Nov. 19. Italy’s large Communist I Party, and the ruling Christian Democrats won substantial gains in local elections, involving nearly 2.000,000 Italians, during the week-end. the Associated Press reported. Scattered returns showed the Communists gained seats in new municipal councils, and in a new regional council in the Trentino-Alto Adige, on the Austrian border. The elections, involving! more than 5 per cent of Italy's j electorate, are the first since! the nation-wide Parliamentary! elections last May. which, marked gains for the Com- 1 munists and the Christian Democrats, and crucial losses for the Socialists.
