Ambitious project

open air stdium capable of accommodating 120,000 spectators is among the projects planned for a multi-million dollar sports complex at Concord. Sydney, which may be completed by 1976.

If the New South Wales Government approves the building of the complex, construction of three of the five stages can be begun at the end of next year and completed by 1972.

These stages include a covered indoor stadium accommodating 20,000 persons, outdoor practice fields for 4000 competitiors, an indoor Tartan-type athletic trek, an associated sporting club with a membership of 20,000 and 300 to 400 motel units.

The fourth stage comprises the stadium, an outdoor all-weather athletic track and provision for cycling, greyhound racing and hockey. The stadium would be used for all football codes, in place of the Sydney Cricket Ground which has proved inadequate for major club and international Rugby league fixtures. An indoor heated Olympicstandard swimming and diving pool and a yachting marina would complete the complex. The chairman of the Sydney Sports Centre project committee, Mr J. McLardie, said that one of the major aims was to apply for the 1978 or 1982 Commonwealth Games and the 1988 Olympics.
