Solo Cellist

Wilfred Simeuaur, coprincipal cellist in the N.Z.B.C. Orchestra and a well-known concert soloist, will make his first appearance with the Christchurch Civic Orchestra on Saturday, playing Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in the orchestra’s fourth subscription concert in the Civic Theatre.

Also on the programme, with Dobbs Franks conducting, will be Wagner’s Meistersinger Overture and Shostakovitch’s First Symphony—all played by a full orchestra of about 60 players.

It is eight years since Mr Simenaur made his concert debut, playing the Elgar Cello Concerto,- with

Colin Davis conducting, in England, where he had gone to study in 1947. He began his professional career in London in 1950, playing in symphony and opera orchestras, and later was a founder member of the Academy of St Martins-in-the-Field and of the Fidelis Quartet. Before he left England to join the New Zealand National Orchestra (now the N.Z.B.C. Orchestra) Mr Simenaur was heard regularly on the 8.8. C. as a recitalist in a group which also included the soprano, Emily Mair—his wife. In New Zealand, too, he has made quite a name for himself as a soloist.
