Youth Admits Damage
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Nov. 18.
A youth who did not like using a particular machine at his work damaged the machine several times, Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M., was told in the Magistrate’s Court today. Pona Pihema, aged 17, a factory hand, also damaged the machine once because he wanted to finish work early, said Sergeant B. L. Pearce.
Pihema admitted six charges, all between August 31 and November 7, of wilful damage to the property of Donaghy’s Rope and Twine Company, Ltd, to a total value of $52.45. Mr Pearce said Pihema three times cut the wiring leading to the machine, twice jammed the gears, and on the last occasion caused a fire, which could have been serious, by interfering with the wiring. For the defence, Mr D. M. Robinson said Pihema had previously worked for the company. On being reemployed, he was put on the night shift. Disliking the machine, he tried to break it, rather than see the supervisor.
Mr Sinclair remanded Pihema to November 25 for a probation officer's report and sentence.
