European Currency fIV.Z, Press Association) ! WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. ! The deputy governor of the! Reserve Bank (Mr R. W. R. White) said tonight that New Zealand banks were the first! in the world to open today! and after the week-end con-i fusion over European cur-1 rency rates they had decided to wait for European banks! to set exchange rates. Because of currency specu-j lation over the West German! mark and the French franc! New Zealand banks today suspended trading in European currencies. New Zealand banks normally used the closing rates on the European banks, but after the events of the weekend there were no safe guides to rates, he said. Mr White said it was expected that if the European banks worked normally after the week-end New Zealand banks would have rates of exchange to quote, and buying and selling would be back to normal tomorrow.
