Criticism Of Trot Stake
Strong disapproval of the small stakes for the trotters section of the Inter-dominion Championships at Adelaide next year was expressed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Owners. Trainers and Breeders’ Association in Christchurch on Wednesday. Mr M. T. Willis, of Auckland, said the prize money of $3BOO for the Grand Final of the trotters championship was a “disgrace.” “The stake for the grand final at Alexandra Park this year was small enough, $6OOO, but the Adelaide stake is ridiculous and no incentive to owners of New Zealand trotters to send their horses to the meeting.” Mr Willis said the Adelaide stake compared most unfavourably with what was given for trotters’ i?ace£ in New Zealand, especially in relation to the costs involved in taking horses to Australia. The Canterbury Park Cup was worth $6OOO and the Dominion Handicap. $7500. At Inter-dominion Championships in New Zealand since the war the stakes for the grand finals of the- trotters’ section have been $6400 (Alexandra Park, 1968), $6250 (Forbury Park. 19651, $6OOO .(Alexandra Park, 1955). $9lOO (Addington, 1951) and $5lOO (Alexandra Park 1948).
