Mini-skirts To Blame
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) SYDNEY, Nov. 14. Mini-skirts ate to blame for an increase in pack rapes, a woman member of the New South Wales Parliament said this week. Mrs Eileen Furley, chairman of a select committee set up by the Legislative Council to investigate a recent wave of violent sex crimes, said hearings had revealed that young girls were chiefly responsible for mass rapes. She blamed their “provocative dress and behaviour” and
particularly singled out miniskirts and bikinis. “Knee-length skirts would make all the difference,” she said, “and if bikinis were
confined to private swimming pools and backyards, pack rape might ease off.” Mrs Furley, who is middleaged and wears her skirt at “a respectable length,” added: “You probably think I have a phobia or something about mini-skirts, but I get the horrors when I see women of my own age setting bad examples to their daughters.” She said she had come to her conclusion after “detailed and exhaustive inquiries” by the committee. She said the committee’s hearings would finish in December and a report would be presented to Parliament early next year.
