The senior competition was ivery close between the first j two teams, North Canterbury scoring 85.67, Timaru 84.80, (and the third team,Mid-Can-(terbury, 80.02. The winning team comj prised N. Hewitt, B. Thomp- | son, A. Harrison, and A. (Pickering. ( Timaru won the intermediate contest with 86.60 points. l

North Canterbury was more than 6 points back with 80.80, while Mid-Canterbury, with 76.67, scraped in for third, a fraction ahead of Christchurch, with 76.62. j Competitors in the young farmers’ section were allowed to shear two trial sheep before shearing eight competition sheep. Nine heats were run in the Canterbury machine shearing title, four contestants being selected to compete in the final at 2.45 p.m. today. Those who qualified for, the final were S. Ryan (Pleasant Point), R. Bishop (Ashburton), M. Irvine • Cheviot), and R. Summerfield (Rangiora). The fastest time of the dav was recorded by R. Millar, of I

Leeston, who sheared four hog gets in 5m in 45sec.

The time and points allocations for the four finalists were: Ryan. 5m in 47sec, 91.05 points; Bishop, smin 55sec, 90.50 points; Irvine. smin 52sec. 90.30 points; Summerfield, 6min 26sec. 88.15 points. Dyring the afternoon. Godfrey Bowen sheared 10 hoggets with L. Heeney (Rakaiai, G. Cartney (Ashburton), who won the contest last year, and Ryan. He was ahead of his three juniors until he had sheared the first four sheep, but he became restricted with cramp, and lost his advantage while shearing the last six.

The competitions will continue today with the national blade shearing championship, the final of the Canterbury machine championship and the (national junior blades contest.
