SEAT FOR CHINA
Russia, France Make Plea (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 14
The Soviet Union and France yesterday urged the General Assembly to recognise Peking’s right to a seat in the United Nations and to expel the Nationalist Chinese representatives. I The Soviet Ambassador (Mr Jacob Malik) and the French Ambassador (Mr Armand Berard) supported a resolution to this effect and opposed a proposal to study the China problem. New Zealand, Malawi and Gabon argued the Nationalist Chinese case.
Mr Berard said it was even more important to resolve the problem this year. “Now that a glimmer of peace is appearing in SouthEast Asia, my delegation is aware of the need for the United Nations to perform its duties and reflect the realities of the world," he said. “This means it should stop holding at a distance the People's Republic of China which represents nearly a quarter of the world's population.”
