Submerge gave 14 rivals a start and a sound boating to win the Ashley Handicap at odds of nearly 40/1 but he had to survive an Inquiry into interfaronce before his first placing was confirmed. J. R. Dowling brought Submerge forward on a big run from the back to challenge for the lead going to the last furlong. One moment he was seven wide outside Orient Queen and the next he had ducked right across on the inside running rail. Dowling was charged and found guilty of causing interference to Orient Queen, but after hearing evidence from the stipendiary stewards, the riders concerned in the incident and viewing a film of the race the judicial committee allowed the judge’s placings to stand. Dowling was fined $3O. It was a race full of incident. The judge, Mr R. F. McCoubrey, was severely reprimanded by the judicial committee for placing Alberta third when that

horse had finished towards the rear.
