Churches Locked

(N.Z. Press Association) LEVIN, Nov. 13. Some traditionally “open” churches in Levin closed and locked their doors today in conformity with a police request, which was prompted by the fire which damaged St Columba’s Anglican Church, Linton, yesterday afternoon. Arson was suspected. There have been no church arson cases in Levin or its district, but Senior-Sergeant C. J. Smiliie said the Levin police were contacting all the church authorities. The old wooden Salvation Army hall in Levin was one of the churches considered a likely target.

Biscuit Prices.— Recent increases in biscuit prices were found on investigation to be in response to increases in costs experienced by manufacturers, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) told Parliament today.—P.A.
