Burnside Roll May Reach 1800
Bumside High School, after nine years of rapid growth from its opening roll of 233 to its present 1150, was faced with the possibility of becoming a pioneer in large school devolpment in New Zealand, said the headmaster (Mr C. Cross) in his annual report at the senior prize-giv-ing ceremony last evening.
It seemed that a roll of 1800 pupils or more was possible after a few years, he said. The school had a site which admirably met the need of space for further building and recreation space, and the Education Department was showing a read-
iness to consider the special requirements for such a school in the way of varied classrooms and administrative offices.
“Though I have always recognised the value of a small school, I am aware of advantages in the larger ones too,” said Mr Cross. “Given the necessary accommodation and staffing, I can see no reason why a very large school should not be most successful.”
Persons attending the ceremony were welcomed by the chairman of the board (Mr B. Zeff). The guest speaker was Professor G. N. Malcolm,
of the physical chemistry department at Massey University.
