Robes For “Strictly Formal Occasions”
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 13. The Mayor of Dunedin (Mr J. G. Barnes) is not worried about being referred to as “His Worship”— but he does object to wearing the Mayoral robes too often. “For instance, I don’t see there is any need to be all decked out in the Mayoral robes at council meetings,” Mr Barnes said today. “They should be kept for strictly formal occasions. At any other time, the
Mayoral chain is surely enough,” he said. “I was put here to do a job, and dressing up in these robes adds nothing to the proceedings.” Mr Barnes had been asked for his comments on the action of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) who says he does not like the term “Your Worship,” and prefers to be addressed as “Mr Mayor”. Mr Barnes said he would ask the Dunedin City Council for permission to wear the Mayoral robes on formal occasions only.
