PENSIONERS’ RATES

Riccarton Aid Proposal

He would like to see the council establish a community chest or some way of subsidising pensioners to help them meet their rates, said Cr F. R. Longley, at a meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council on Monday evening. “It is inevitable that our rates will increase considerably due to the effect of “Mona Vale” and some townplanning jobs that we will have to carry out,” he said. “Pensioner ratepayers will find it difficult to meet this increase, and I would like to see a special fund or something like a community chest set up to help them.” Cr R. S. Lester said the time had come when the council should help its pensioner ratepayers. On Cr Longley’s motion, the question was referred to the finance committee. He said he would prepare a statement for the committee.
