Stylos Succeeds

Stylos assured herself of a start in the major races on the later days of the meeting when she beat 13 rivals, including three New Zealand Cup-class pacers, in the Canterbury Free-for-all, first leg of the on-course concession double at Addington Racewayyesterday.

Stylos was well handled by M. Holmes for this, her fourth win of the season for Mrs M. Hooper, of Christchurch.

Holmes secured the perfect run for Stylos. She was three places back, on the outside, and was tracking James till

the three furlongs. When the pacemaker, Quesnel, moved away from the fence to allow his stablemate, Indecision, to run to the lead with Snowline on the home turn, Holmes took Stylos forward past the tiring James to lead the chase as they ran to the straight

Snowline mastered Indecision just inside the last furlong, but she had nothing left to cope with Stylos’s challenge a little closer to home and was beaten by two i lengths. Snowline held second by a length and a half from Indecision and Richard Hanover came home strongly from mid-field for fourth, only a head away.

The favourite. Beat Time, was a length and a half back fifth. He broke at the start and made a big run to raise the hopes of his backers ojKthe home turn, but could find nothing extra in the last furlong.

Master Alan was checked and lost his driver at the start and Amend was pulled up after being badly hampered by Master Alan. 524 DOUBLE

The second leg of the oncourse double, the Final Handicap. ended the way the majority wanted—the popular fancy, Selwyn Hanover was first and the runner-up, Cochrane, was the place favourite.

Supporters of the StylosSelwyn Hanover combination received $24.35 for $1 and the concession double with Cochrane was worth $9.90 for $l.

While Cochrane received the run of the race behind iLght View. Selwyn Hanover was in fifth place until the home turn.

Cochrane mastered Light View and spurted clear early in the run home, but Selwvn Hanover had the stronger finish and won going away by a neck.

Bewitched, which was just ahead of Selwyn Hanover in the running, was two lengths back third. She held that place by a neck from Waratah, which had followed Light View and Cochrane to the straight.

AT GOOD ODDS Lucky Wood Improved on anything else she had done this season when she led for the last 13 furlongs of two miles to win the Introductory Handicap at long odds for her Ashburton owner-trainer. D. G. McCormick.

Lucky Wood beat the favourite. Briganelli. which improved from the third line to take up the chase on the home turn, by a length.

Cardigan Lass, four Dlaces back on the inner until the three furlongs, was half a.head away third and Bobby’s Girl made a late run from mid-field for a close fourth. Coventry led in the rest of a tired lot.

Super Wine stood on the mark and took no part in the race and Magic Time was nulled up after breaking badly early. Stella Globe also galloped off the mark. SMART YC NGSTER Leroy raised h les of a victory for Waikato stables in the New Zealand Derby Stakes on the final night of the meeting when he gave 14 rivals a start and a sound beating in the First Riccarton Stakes.

The Ngaruawahia-tradned three-year-old galloped for a stride or two from the back mark of 36 yards, but auickly settled to his gait. A. K. Holmes sent him on a big run from the back near the half mile and it carried him up to second equal but four wide on the home turn. Leroy swamped his rivals for finishing sneed and won going away by a length and a quarter.

Prince Forbes, which shared the third line most of the way. fought on for second. He beat Clandeboye. the pacemaker from the mile, by a head and Radiant Globe, which tracked Prince Forbes most of the w’ay. was a nose back fourth. THIRD WIN His Nibs gained his third win from his last four starts for his Templeton owner, Mr D. D. Moore, when he clearly outstayed 14 rivals in the Addington Handicap.

D. D. Nyhan had Hi’s Nibs handily placed all the way. He was fourth on the outside for the first mile, second equal in a close running field from the half mile to the straight then raced away inside the last furlong to win by three lengths. Overland, Bronze Maiden and Heidelberg, three of the tailenders six furlongs out, filled the minor placings in that order.

Bronze Maiden raced round the field to join the leaders as they ran down the back the last

time. Overland joined her in front two furlongs out and Heidelberg was close behind these two on the home turn. At the end there was a neck and half a neck between them, with a nose to Bright Frost, anotherwhich made ground late. CONSISTENT MARE Glenda Hanover improved a sound record for her Invercargill owner. Mr E. Broad, in the Spring Handicap, for which she was 3/2 in the betting. R. Young had Glenda Hanover well placed all the way. She was three places bgck on the outside and had a trailing run behind Student until the home turn. Glenda Hanover joined' Proudly and Student near the straight entrance and fought on. best in a tight finish to win by a neck.

Leading Light, which led out then kept handy to the pace to the straight, out-ran Student for second. There was a neck between these two then two lengths to Royal Fame, which trailed the early leader and was in the third line on the home turn.

Vantage made ground for fifth, but was in a gap of two lengths and a half.

NOTABLE TREBLE The Auckland pacer. Monsignor. brought his record to three wins from four starts on a South Island campaign for his Auckland owners. Mrs M. R. and R. P. Norton, when he beat 15 rivals hands down in the Empire Handicap. Monsignor gaUoped off the mark and was one of the tailenders when the’eariy rush for positions was over, but P. T. Wolfenden brought him forward on a big run in the back straight the last time and he joined Betsy Morano and Maida Million in front on the home turn.

In the run home Wolfenden had to do no more than show Monsignor the whip and he drew out to win by a length and a half.

Wipe Out, which received the run of the race, outfinished Maida Million for second by three lengths and a ( half. The favourite, which was second equal but in the open all the way, saved her place bickers by only half a head from Happy Hal, third equal until the home turn.
