FROST IN NORTH

Hardship To Growers

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, Nov. 12. Last Thursday’s frost will cost Hawke’s Bay a good deal, not only in terms of hard cash but in personal hardship. Already orchardists have had to pay their staffs off, and will not recruit the usual amount of labour later in the season.

Since last Thursday morning, when thermometers registered up to 14 degrees of frost, horticulturists, growers, and helpers have been assessing damage in orchards and market gardens. Apples and tomatoes are the main victims of the frost.

By-Law on Bottles.—The Tauranga City Council will have a by-law drawn up prohibiting the sale of nonreturnable soft-drink bottles in the city.—P.A.
