Strong Wind A Tradition?

The 1867 show may have established the tradition that It always blows a nor-wester on show dav, a tradition which last year’s southerly has done little to damage. It really did blow a violent nor-west wind on November 8, 1867, hut, said “The Press” in its report, while "the clouds of dust rendered the trip down Colombo Street past the Belt anything but a pleasant excursion, the attendance was very large.”

The 1867 show had a surprising range of sheep breeds. The list was, of course, headed by Merinos, which “The Press” remarked, were gradually giving way in the cultivated country to the heavier long-woolled class of sheep.” The principal sections apart from Merinos were Leicester, Cotswold, Lincoln, Romney Marsh, Southdowns and Hampshire, and on exhibition there were Cheviots, Norfolk Downs and Australian Merinos.
