Mr Mayor

“ Your Worship ” is an archaism, fittingly preserved in the law courts but bound to seem a little pretentious on most contemporary civic occasions. The new Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Guthrey, prefers “Mr “ Mayor ”: and so do we. Perhaps it has a slightly North American flavour: better that than the pseudo “ Lord Mayor ” affected in Australia, which some city councillors would-be aidermen tried to inflict on New Zealand mayors some years ago. The dignity of the office is to be found in the holder’s conduct, not in his title.
