Taylor’s Mistake
Sir,—May 1 warn the public of a hazard in Taylor’s Mistake car park? Between the car park and the sandhills there is a pile of old litter, smashed beer bottles, and tin cans lurking under and around a macrocarpa tree This tree is at a height which small children find enticing. Much of the debris is overgrown with grass or covered in sand and as it has not been removed ever since I first visited Taylor’s Mistake nine years ago the rubbish must be several layers thick. One of my children has a scar which required seven stitches. He received this from a smashed beer bottle while trying to retrieve a ball from the tree. Five months ago I showed this litter to a foreman of the council department concerned. Nothing has been done. Six weeks ago 1 wrote to the council about this and other matters concerning the use of public land on this beach and the state of the public track. Needless to say, J have not received a reply to this and nothing has been done about the litter.— Yours, etc..
RESIDENT AND RATEPAYER. October 18, 1968. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: ‘The macrocarpa tree is at a favourite parking stop and litter is often left round it The area is cleaned up frequently and twice in the last three weeks glass has been removed from round this tree. The department has received a letter which I presume is from ‘Resident and Ratepayer’ and has made several attempts in the last few weeks to contact her by telephone as it is not clear from her letter which council officers she is referring to and which public places. All the tracks in Taylor’s Mistake are not public tracks. Periodical routine maintenance is done on the one which is.”]
