Discussions On Use Of Milk Biscuits
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Nov. 8.
The New Zealand Trade Commissioner for the Caribbean will visit Kingston, Jamaica, next week to discuss with the Jamaican authorities the possibility of introducing New Zealand milk biscuits in Jamaican schools.
The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) said this in Parliament yesterday when asked by Mr P. Blanchfield (Lab., Westland) If there had been any progress on the proposal that the milk biscuits
could be exchanged for shipments of Jamaican oranges. Mr Marshall said he was aware of an approach to the New Zealand Dairy Board on the possible distribution of milk biscuits to school children in Jamaica.
“The board was informed that the whole question of the adequacy of the nutritional levels of school children in Jamaica had come under the scrutiny of a committee appointed by the Minister of Education,” said Mr Marshall.
“The matter Is in abeyance until this committee reports.” The Minister said the Trade Commissioner would emphasise the value of the milk biscuit, and other New Zealand dairy foods, for inclusion in any school-lunch programme.
